Hello Room 8 families,

It sure felt tropical in our classroom today with everyone wearing their beach gear. There were googles, bathing suits (on top of clothing), sunglasses, sun hats, flowers lei necklaces, dresses and more! Thank you to everyone who dressed up and showed their school spirit.

Today we worked on step 2 of creating a concrete poem. Our first step was brainstorming a list of 10 words to describe an object (like a star). Today for the second step we turned 3 to 4 of those words from our list into complete sentences. Tomorrow for our third and final step we will turn our sentences into a concrete (shape) poem by writing our words into the shape of our object (like a star).

We had another great lesson this morning! The students in Room 8 are continuing to learn about life on-earth. Today we discovered that reptiles were next! We discussed the categories of reptiles including: snakes, crocodilians, lizards, and turtles/tortoises and if they are carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores!

We also used our knowledge and math vocabulary to make and describe 3D shapes using play dough and toothpicks. We also utilized the Montessori Geometric Solids to check to help us count the number of edges, vertices, and faces.

Your child will be coming home with their shape booklet today or tomorrow!

Show and Share

Today we discussed students being able to share important life events or something they are proud of in the classroom. We are not able to bring in any items, however you can send Mrs. Melindy a photo, video, or image of something your child would like to share with their classmates on the SmartBoard (something they knit, a trick their dog can do, a medal they won in hockey, etc). Or students can choose to share a talent (dance, singing, magic trick) live in front of their peers.

There is no specific date that our classroom 'Show and Share' will take place. Whenever you feel like your child has something that is current and important we will try to make time in the day for sharing.

Fun Lunch Reminder:

The Lake Bonavista School Council will be organizing a Fun Lunch every other week. Fun Lunch is run through a program called Healthy Hunger at www.healthyhunger.ca. Kids enjoy having a fun lunch to eat at school and parents enjoy a break from making lunch! Fun lunch is an optional event. You can begin ordering now!

Account Set up

For parents who have previously had a Healthy Hunger account your login will be the same, however you will need to log in and then add your student to the correct school and class from the drop-down menus.

For parents new to Healthy Hunger, you will need to create an account on the Healthy Hunger website and then add your student to the correct school and class from the drop-down menus.

Ordering Lunches

Once vendors are confirmed they will be added to the calendar for your selection. You can order for as few or many days as you like. You can place and pay for orders for multiple days and multiple children all at once. Payment is done online through Healthy Hunger. No payments are made to school.

Deadline for ordering is 5 days in advance.
For Thursday meals, orders must be placed by 11:59 pm on Saturday in order to give the vendors time to order and prep.
You will receive confirmation of your order, if you do not get a confirmation email it is possible your order didn’t go through. Log back in to double check and avoid the confusion.

Cancelling an order

If you need to cancel a lunch you can do that until the cut-off period which is 5 days before each lunch and get a refund. With more absences due to symptoms cancelling in advance may not always be an option.

Lunch Delivery

On the specified day lunch is delivered to the school for the students. We will require a few volunteers to help distribute to the classes, so please ensure you are on our volunteer contact list if you are available to help.

Please remember to pack a snack and water in addition to the fun lunch order. Please pack a complete lunch if you did not order that day.

Missed Fun Lunches

For those times you miss the option to cancel, and your child won’t be there due to sickness or any other reason, we ask that you please contact the school by 11:30am on the day of Fun Lunch to choose an option.
Your options are:

  • -  Pick the lunch up by the end of the day.

    -  Send it home with a sibling.

  • -  Donate it to the staff room.

We are unable to give these lunches to another child without their guardian’s consent. Any lunches that are not claimed by the end of the day will be composted.

As I'm sure you've heard, masks will no longer be mandatory for students to wear in school starting on Monday, February 14th. We had a talk as a class about how different families will want different things and we all have different beliefs and views. We discussed the importance of showing respect for everyone’s decision to wear or not wear a mask. We will not be asking our classmates to put one on, or take one off. If you could please review this with your child and discuss your expectations for your child regarding masks, I would appreciate it!

More masks and rapid testing kits provided by the government were sent home today.

Hello Room 8 families,

The Grade 1 students have continued our learning about the Second Montessori Great Lesson. We have explored the first life forms on land which include: plants, insects, and amphibians. We continue to learn about the needs of animals as the year progresses. Check out the visitors we had in our classroom on Friday and Monday!

Meet Fire Flames, Mrs. Morden's fire belly toad and...

...here are Sali and Mander, Mrs. Green's classroom pets. Ask your child about what these critters need to survive!

This month we are focusing on kindness! We've read the story Have you filled a bucket today? by Carol McCloud. This book shares the idea of everyone carrying around an invisible bucket and that bucket can either be full or empty. Bucket fillers are people that do nice things for others and bucket dippers are people that do unkind things.

We have been brainstorming all of the ways to show kindness at school and fill up someone's bucket! Here is what we came up with:

- helping a friend if they are hurt

- asking someone if they'd like to play with you if you notice they are lonely

- taking turns with work choice materials

And so much more as you can see below!

  • Valentine’s Day

In keeping with protocols – we will be asking families to not send in treats or Valentines for other students. Mrs. Melindy will be planning a class activity that promotes kindness and community as well as a fun “celebration” for Valentine’s Day!
