Happy Halloween Room 8!

We used our Spooky Senses today in lots of activities. First we used our sense of hearing to listen to these 'Spooky Sounds' and guess what they were! Feel free to play these at home with your child and guess the spooky sound!

Next we used our sense of taste to try the pumpkin seeds from our small pumpkin and big pumpkin. Most of the students voted that the big pumpkin seeds tasted a bit better than the small one!

Then we used our sense of sight to play a game called 'Roll a Monster' with a friend and to look at all of the costumes from the Grade 2/3s and Grade 6s who were a part of our Halloween cohort parade!

Students are coming home today with their skeleton art. Look at how spooky they are!

It was such a fun day celebrating Halloween! Have a spook-tacular weekend from the Grade 1 teacher pumpkin patch: Mrs. Melindy, Mrs. Proctor, and Ms. Midgley!

We've been doing lots of pumpkin exploration this week! First we sketched our pumpkins using techniques we learned at the beginning of the school year.

The next thing we did with the pumpkins was:

- Estimate how tall each pumpkin was
- Predict if it was going to sink or float
- Estimate the number of seeds in each pumpkin

We counted all of the seeds by putting them into groups of ten and learning to skip count by 10s.

The small pumpkin had 464 seeds!
The big pumpkin had 355 seeds!

We also played a game called 'Pumpkin Doubles' where we rolled a dice, had to double the number and place our bingo chip on the board.

The next step is to carve our pumpkins so they are ready for our Halloween celebration at school tomorrow!

We are also doing some list writing in Grade 1! Here are the lists we've created so far:
- A list of things that are in a haunted house
- A list of our favourite candy
- A list of things we need for our Halloween costume

Reminders for Friday, October 29th:
- students will wear their costume to school
- no face masks (except our daily cloth or disposable masks)
- no weapons
- it should be comfortable to sit in and participate in activities for the entire day

**There will be no treats handed out to friends, instead students are invited to bring in their own special treat that we can eat later on in the morning.**

Hello Room 8 families,

Today Mrs. Melindy introduced list writing to the Grade 1 students. We talked about all the kinds of lists people can make: shopping lists, toy wish lists, to do lists, who you are inviting to your birthday list, and so on. We have been really brave spellers and wrote down a list of "Things for my costume." Ask your child what they wrote about!

In math we practiced subitizing! Do you know what that is? Well...subitizing is when you look at a number of objects and automatically know how many are there without counting. We practiced our subtilizing using dice today.

For Daily Language Arts today we discussed the letter Rr and all of the things that start with R or have the letter R in them.

During our fun walking field trip on Friday we collected many leaves in the park and today we sketched them! We used the sketching techniques we learned at the beginning of the year to add lots of detail and make our leaves look realistic! Check out some below.

Room 8 had our walking field trip with the Grade 6 classroom today! We used our senses to make scientific observations of seasonal changes by participating in a scavenger hunt and a fall sit spot. Our classroom also ate their snack in the park today and played some games with our big buddies! Ask your child about their walking field trip.

We had another demonstration for our First Montessori Great Lesson. We explored how water formed on the earth. Then we observed the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. Check out the photo below and ask your child about what they learned!

Please send a pair of headphones to keep at school so your child can plug it into the iPads and  participate in 'Listen to Reading' during our Daily Language arts stations.

There will be no school on Monday. I will see all students back to school on Tuesday, October 19th!

Important Dates:

October 18th - No School
October 19th - Return yellow 'My Cultural Heritage' page
October 21st - Pajama Day
October 22nd - School Shirt Day
October 29th - Halloween Celebration at school

Hello Room 8 families!

**Reminder: Please bring back your child's yellow 'My Cultural Heritage' page.** If you did not receive one or need a new one please email Mrs. Melindy.

What have we been up to in Grade 1? Well...

We have been practicing painting tints by mixing colours with white and painting shades by mixing colours with black.

We have  been working on how to represent numbers using pictures, tens frames, tally marks, dice, and number bonds.

We have learned more about the letters Pp, Uu, Oo, Mm, Xx, Aa, Dd and Tt. Ask your child what actions goes along with each letter sound!

We have taken a pause in our First Montessori Great Lesson to think about the question 'How did water form on the earth?' Some of our hypothesis include:

- "The lava from the volcanoes cooled and turned into water."
- "The clouds made rain and that is where the water came from."
- "A rock fell from the sky and water came out of it."
- "The sun was so hot that the sweat came out of it and that's where water came from."
- "The water first formed on the earth by coming out of the dirt."

Very interesting scientific observations indeed!

October 15th - Walking Field Trip
