Remember that tomorrow is Orange shirt day. If your child does not have an orange shirt there will be a sticker provided for everyone to wear that says 'Every Child Matters.'

There will be no school on Thursday, September 30th in honour of Truth and Reconciliation Day.

We have learned about the Letter Mm during Daily Language Arts with Mrs. Melindy. Ask your child what sound Mm makes and the action that goes along with it.

Today we had another demonstration for the First Montessori Great Lesson. Ask your child about it!

Reminders:

- Send your child to school with a reusable water and the proper utensils for their snack and lunch.

Sandra Vandenhoff, an Educational Audiologist with the CBE will be visiting our classroom on Friday with her service dog to give us more information about the technology used with one of the students in Room 8 who is deaf and hard of hearing.

On Wednesday we went into the garden and listened to Mrs. Melindy read the story Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. Check out the leaf creations we made! Can you guess what we made by looking at the photos below?

Today we created a page in our sketchbook titled "Fall Favourites" or "Things I love about autumn." Ask your child what their favourite part of fall is and share what yours is!

This week we were learning and exploring The Montessori First Great Lesson. Have a conversation with your child about what they've heard in the stories so far.

Terry Fox Run
Tomorrow we will be having our Annual Terry Fox Run. In our classroom we've discussed the life of Terry Fox and the contributions he has made to cancer research as well as coming together in the afternoon for a virtual wrap up assembly.  Students are encouraged to wear blue/white/ or their school t-shirt on this day.

Students can dedicate their run to someone who they know has been affected by cancer. Please speak to your child prior to our run and if they choose to dedicate their run to someone, they can share this in their class sharing circle prior to or after their run.

Should you wish to make a donation online, please use the following link to donate through the Terry Fox website:

Conferences

What an amazing school year start-up we have been having at LBS! Typically, at this time of year, we host Parent Teacher Conferences in an Open House format. With restrictions due to Covid-19, our format has been adjusted. This year, each class has created a video to introduce families to our school, answer commonly asked questions and show details of how our class works. These videos will be released on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 4:00 pm. If you have questions after viewing the video, please reach out. We are certainly missing seeing families in our school building and look forward to future opportunities where this may be possible. There will be no school on Friday, September 24th

Birthday Celebrations

Everyone wants to be remembered and cherished on the special day that they were born. The Montessori Birthday Walk Around the Sun is a lovely way to celebrate a child's birthday in a school setting.
Children love to hear about the journey from their birth to the present day. They want to hear stories, look at photos, and remember wonderful memories. They want to know how cherished they are, and how our life and world is better because they were born into our family or now belong to our class. The Montessori Birthday Walk Around the Sun is the perfect way to do this.

In preparation for the Birthday Walk Around the Sun, the parents of the birthday child are asked to email Mrs. Melindy with a digital picture for each year of the child's life, and write a short life story to accompany the pictures. Below is a sample of a life story. I will send home a paper copy of this template during your child's birthday month. We will celebrate our July and August birthdays in June.

The Montessori Birthday Walk around the Sun is more than just a birthday celebration; it's a lesson in science, astronomy, and grace, and a community building experience for the entire class.

As we are still respecting health protocols, we ask that no items come from home (edible or non-edible treats). Thank you for your understanding.

Happy Fri-yay! And what a fun Friday it was!

Today we explored patterns using sidewalk chalk outdoors! We created:

- shape patterns

- colour patterns

- size patterns

We also went outside and did a sit spot in our garden. We tried to remember some sketching techniques we learned yesterday! Ask your child about stippling, stumbling, burnishing, blending, hatching, and cross-hatching.

This morning we listened to Mrs. Melindy read the story Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. In our writing journals we wrote "It's not a box. It's a ____" Then we drew a photo of a box and turned it into something amazing. Our imagination caps were really working today! Some students turned their box shape into a dinosaur, a mountain, a rocket ship, or a robot!

Have a wonderful weekend! I am excited to see everyone back to school on Monday.

Kind regards,

Mrs. Amber Melindy

 Hello Room 8 families,

I hope everyone had an amazing long weekend! It's so nice to see the students back at school relaxed and refreshed.

What have we been up to in Grade 1 this week?

- We are exploring the letter P by naming and matching it's upper and lower case forms. Today our Polly Panda colouring page was sent home, you can practice reading it with your child. Also, check out some of the words beginning with the letter P that we brainstormed and copied!

- We have been comparing and contrasting colours, using terms such as warm and cool. Check out our crayon colour wheel and water colour paint colour wheels!

- We've also been creating shape and colour patterns, drew a self portrait, had sit spots outdoors in the garden, and enjoyed music with Mrs. Kawchuk.

Looking forward to more fun and learning!

Mrs. Melindy
