The grade 1 students have been exploring more of the Montessori Second Great Lesson. We learned about fossils and actually became paleontologists as we used tools to find some shell fossils. Check out the photos below!

Next in our Great Lesson we explored the next part in the story of how life comes to earth. I'll give you a hint..."This animal had a long body, but no legs. Its skin was hard and scaly. It swam around the ocean easily because it had little flaps that helped it to steer and turn and stop. Now these flaps are called fins. The animal could breathe underwater through another set of flaps called gills..." What is it?

Well, this animal was the earth's first fish!

And guess what we now have as our new classroom pet? A male rose petal betta fish and we named him Marshmallow!

We created lists in our writing journal about what a fish needs to survive. We discussed the difference between wants and needs. Some of the things we came up with were:
- water
- habitat (or home or shelter)
- food
- care
- oxygen (or air)

Upcoming Dates:

  • December 2 – Holiday Character Day

  • December 16 – Ugly Sweater Day

  • December 17 – PJ Day – Last day of classes before the break

 Hello families,

What have we been up to in Room 8? Well...

We've been celebrating National Metis Week by learning about Symbols of Metis Culture. Ask your child about the moccasin and sash artifacts that were brought into our classroom.

We continue to explore student's Cultural Heritage by learning how to say hello in Michif, Cree, and French!

We have started the Second Great Lesson in our Montessori classroom. The students in Room 8 explored early ocean life including jellyfish, seaweed, sea sponges, and sea worms. The most recent demonstration was trilobites.

The students in Room 8 continue to learn about representing numbers to twenty using pictures, numbers, and words. The Grade 1s have began a Writers Workshop where they are following five steps to become a good writer. This math work and writing work will be sent home next week before conferences for your child to share with you!

More information about conferences will be sent in a School Messenger on Friday afternoon.

Take care,

Mrs. Melindy

Today we were taught how to say hello in many different languages from the students in our classroom! One student even taught us how to say "I love you" in Blackfoot!

Veterans Food Drive

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Grade 6 Students in Action Club have organized and will be running a food drive starting on November 1st and ending on November 16th. The collected food will be going to the Veterans Food Bank, as Remembrance Day is coming up and we would like to show our appreciation for our Veterans.  This also connects to our learning in preparing for the upcoming Remembrance Day assembly that Room 7 and Room 8 will be hosting.

Please bring non-perishable food items such as: soup, pasta, baby food, cereal, peanut butter, protein or granola bars, trail mix and canned goods like fish or vegetables. Any other non-perishable items that you think of are welcomed to be donated. Don’t forget to try and bring some gluten free or nut free items in case of anyone with allergies.

Move-ember Challenge
November is movement month at LBS! We are encouraging students to be active throughout the winter with a movement challenge for move-ember!

Students are encouraged to keep track of their movement minutes outside of school time from November 1-30. The class that earns the most movement minutes at the end of the month will earn a special reward! Please support your child in tracking their movement minutes either on a hardcopy sent home with your child that looks like this...

Let’s encourage each other to be active and healthy! See this video here for more information about our at school and at home challenges for the month.
